The writer is Sebastian, who plays in this movie as himself. He wrote the script based on his own life and the relationship he has with his father Salvo (played by Deniro).
A barber, or hairstylist as he prefers to be called, works nonstop during his life and learns to live by the cheapest means on anything. That specific way of life was transfered to his son Sebastian, who falls in love with Ellie, a wealthy woman of the exact opposite lifestyle.
The only way for Salvo to give the green light to his son to get married, is when he meets her family. And that's how the story begins, with them going to celebrate the 4th of July in a way they wouldn't even thing of, at the home (palace) of Ellie's parents.
During the entire time of this one-and-a-half-hour film, there is constantly humorous phrases, jokes and sharp remarks from the poor to the rich, as he lives the other side of life.
